Mom-shaming is very real, especially for celebrities. This exceptionally rude phenomenon is when people give unsolicited advice to mothers about how to raise their children. Mom-shamers are rarely medical professionals, child psychologists, and sometimes aren’t even moms themselves! Yet, they think they know what someone else’s child needs better than they do.
That’s not to say that all mothers are perfect. Despite how their children may idealize them, moms are human too and are susceptible to making mistakes, even celebrity moms. So which of these criticized celebs actually messed up and which ones were simply victims of undeserved mom-shaming?
Amy Schumer Went Back to Work
Being a mom is a “doomed if you do, doomed if you don’t” situation, in that no matter what choices you make, someone will say you should’ve done the opposite. One example of this is going back to work. Working mothers get criticized for not being with their kids enough, while stay-at-home moms get chastised for not being “proper feminists” and having careers.
Amy Schumer chose to go back to work two weeks after having her son, Gene, which is completely her own decision to make. Yet, the internet panicked, as if Amy was leaving her newborn alone all day. Maybe they were unaware that the comedian/actress can afford Mary Poppins-level childcare? Amy responded with “I’ve always wanted to be mom-shamed!!!” because that means that she’s now a mom!
Mila Kunis Fed Her Baby
Mila Kunis feeds her daughter, Wyatt, when she’s hungry. Nothing wrong with that right? Well, mom-shamers feel differently. Mila rightfully defended breastfeeding in public by saying, “Why do I do it in public? Because I had to feed my child. She’s hungry. I need to feed her whether it’s out of a bottle or out of my boob no matter where I was.” Really, what is she supposed to do? Let her child go hungry until they’re someplace private?
Mila went on to speak on behalf of herself and her husband, Ashton Kutcher, saying, “It took us a little back because people actually looked at us in a shameful way, and we were like ‘oh my god,’ because it’s so not a sexual act. It didn’t matter to me what other people thought. That’s what I chose to do, but I think it’s unfortunate that people are so hard on women who choose to do it and do it in public.” We agree.
Beyonce Didn’t Care For Her Daughter’s Hair
Beyonce constantly got mom-shamed over the appearance of her daughter, Blue Ivy’s, hair. Blue Ivy, like all kids, wanted to run around and play and didn’t particularly care how her hair looked. The internet decided that this was unacceptable and even started an online petition to get Beyonce to pay more attention to Blue Ivy’s appearance.
One mom-shamer wrote, “No child whose mom spends thousands on her hair (monthly) should live life looking like a sheep.” Another said, “I hate when a mother looks like a million dollars with her hair all done and the child looks like they haven’t seen a comb since they were born.” While we agree that caring for a child’s basic appearance is important, we also recognize that we don’t know exactly what went on in the Carter house. And it’s truly none of our business.
Blake Lively… Didn’t Do Anything
The double standard between fathers and mothers was shown perfectly through Blake Lively getting mom-shamed for what her husband, Ryan Reynolds, did. Ryan posed for a photo with his daughter, James, in a baby carrier. Unfortunately, James wasn’t strapped into the carrier properly, which is a pretty typical mistake for first-time parents. Baby carriers can be tricky!
The internet quickly began to attack Blake for Ryan’s error, because apparently she’s supposed to baby both her child and her husband. Ryan jumped to her defense saying, “It was me, guys. I’m a first-time dad and this is not the first mistake I’ve made and I can guarantee it won’t be the last.”
Cardi B Didn’t Let Her Child Listen to Adult Music
Cardi B’s music is known for being sexual and vulgar, which is fine and well, seeing as how it’s made for adults and not children. However, the internet got upset when Cardi said that she doesn’t let her daughter, Kulture, listen to her music. The issue came to head specifically with her new song WAP, which many people felt was written to empower women. This led mom-shamers to ask Cardi why she didn’t want to empower her daughter through her music.
Cardi responded perfectly by saying, “My daughter doesn’t need to listen to music to be empower neither should your children. The only way to empower your kids is by talking to them, boost their confidence and making sure they get a good education. I never ever said that WAP was made to empower women I’m just a freaky person and this is not the first sex song ever made. Stop expecting celebs to raise your kids.”
Charlize Theron’s Child Acted Like a Regular Kid
When Charlize Theron’s son, Jackson, had a temper tantrum, internet users basically had a tantrum of their own. Anyone who has ever been around children knows that sometimes kids act out and even the best of parents can’t avoid it. Yet, the internet blamed Charlize’s parenting over the fact that her 4-year-old was acting like any other child.
Being a good mom, Charlize didn’t want Jackson’s tantrum to be documented by paparazzi so she tried to get him into the car quickly. Unfortunately, her stressed-out reaction caused the paparazzi to have even more footage of the family’s bad day. We can’t even imagine the stress of trying to shield your child from paparazzi, on top of the regular trials of parenting. That didn’t stop mom-shamers from judging Charlize, though.
Chrissy Teigen Took a Bath With Her Kids
Chrissy Teigen was mom-shamed when she took a family photo of herself in the bath with her two kids, five-year-old Luna, and three-year-old Miles. The internet absolutely panicked, claiming that it was inappropriate for Chrissy to bathe with her children at their ages.
The thing about being naked is that being unclothed is not sexual, doing sexual actions is sexual. There are plenty of scenarios in life in which a person needs to be unclothed and it’s not sexual in nature. For example, medical procedures, trying on clothing, going to a sauna, and so on. The fact that Chrissy was naked around her children is fine, they were still extremely young and seem to have enjoyed the quality time with their mom.
Gabrielle Union Wore a Hospital Gown When Her Baby Was Born
Gabrielle Union had to make the extremely difficult decision to use a surrogate when having her baby, Kaavia James. When Kaavia James was born, Gabrielle lovingly held her new daughter, as any mother should do. However, people were confused as to why Gabrielle was in a hospital bed and wearing a hospital gown when she had not given birth. The internet quickly began to shame her for the “fake” and “staged” photo.
Gabrielle explained that she was trying to have skin-on-skin contact with her baby but it was difficult because Gabrielle was wearing a sweatshirt. Therefore, she removed the sweatshirt and wore a hospital gown so that she could more easily connect with her child. The truth is, though, she shouldn’t have had to explain herself at all.
Gisele Bundchen Pierced Her Baby’s Ears
Gisele Bundchen took her daughter, Vivan, to get her ears pierced when Vivian was just eight-months-old. While piercing babies’ ears is common in many cultures, including Gisele’s, people were still quick to label the supermodel as “cruel.” We have to agree that inflicting unnecessary pain upon a child isn’t the best, that being said, calling a mother “cruel” for it is an exaggeration, to say the least.
One of Gisele’s fans aptly said, “That’s a cultural and individual decision.” Although we may not choose to do it, Gisele clearly meant the best for her child by getting her ears pierced and Vivian seems perfectly fine. Plenty of mothers practice this tradition, so maybe we should stop holding celebrities to different standards.
Halle Berry Protected Her Kids’ Privacy
Halle Berry was accused of being “ashamed” of her children, eight-year-old Nahla and three-year-old Maceo, because she doesn’t show their faces on social media. While Halle does post photos of her family, her kids’ faces are never visible in the pictures. Rather than thinking logically about the actress’s reasoning, the internet decided to assume that Halle didn’t want to be associated with her children.
Halle explained, “Let me be clear – I am not at all ashamed of my children. I try to find creative ways to incorporate them into my feed because they are the biggest part of my life, but I also work very hard to keep their identities as private as I can considering they are only children.” There you have it, she was protecting her kids’ privacy, as a good mother does.
Jenna Dewan-Tatum Is ”Too Sexy” for a Mom
Jenna Dewan-Tatum is a loving mother to her daughter, Everly. Jenna is also a grown woman who enjoys feeling sexy every now and then. Apparently, the internet decided that moms can’t be sexy and they began to shame Jenna for the way she dresses and photos she posts on social media.
Jenna perfectly summed up the situation by saying, “Apparently, when you become a mother, you’re supposed to leave your sexuality at the door, and I never understood that. I think there’s nothing sexier than becoming a mother. You give life. It’s everything. And you don’t change who you are inside just because you have a kid.” We agree and we’d like to add that Jenna is promoting a positive image for mothers by insisting that motherhood is sexy and beautiful.
Shay Mitchell Shared a Loving Moment With Her Child
Shay Mitchell shared a photo of a loving moment between herself and her daughter, Atlas Noa, as Shay was breastfeeding. Of course, as with anything on the internet, some people found it offensive. Rather than not look at something they don’t want to see, the mom-shamers decided to attack Shay instead.
One particularly triggered mom wrote, “She’s not even looking at the baby, she’s not connected with the baby she’s connected with the camera.” Shay responded with, “I missed the part in the baby books that stated I had to maintain eye contact with my daughter while she feeds rather than capture an amazing moment we were having. Pls let me know where I can download your parenting manual, I’ll get right on it!”
Jessica Simpson Let Her Daughter Pose How She Wants To
Jessica Simpson faced a lot of backlash when her five-year-old daughter, Maxwell, posed for a photo. Maxwell was in a bikini, as people often are when going for a swim, and she posed in a cute way that she clearly felt good with. Soon afterward, Jessica got mom-shamed for “sexualizing” her daughter.
Let’s be clear: Adults shouldn’t be sexually attracted to children, regardless of what the child is wearing or how they are standing. We cannot believe that we actually needed to explain that. Furthermore, we doubt that the mom-shamers would’ve reacted the same way if Maxwell were a boy wearing swim shorts and posing in a fun manner. Isn’t it time that we stop telling little girls that they can’t have fun because they might look *gasp* “inappropriate”?
JLo Homeschools Her Kids
Jennifer Lopez homeschools her children, Maximilian and Emme, which is something that plenty of parents around the world choose to do. However, because she’s a celebrity, JLo is held to ridiculous standards and the public has decided that she should give her children a “normal” life. That ship has pretty much sailed, seeing as how their mom is a huge superstar and all.
JLo stated the obvious (which apparently needed to be stated) when she said, “We don’t have a normal life, I don’t have normal kids. I’m not normal. So our life is not normal. I’ve come to terms with that… The most important thing is that they’re with their mom – they don’t need to feel abandoned by a parent.” This is just one of those incredibly difficult parenting decisions that come with fame, and it’s clear that JLo’s solution works for her family.
JWOWW’s Husband Took Their Son to the Pool
Once again, a mom got shamed for something her husband did. Jenni (JWOWW) Farley’s family spent a day at the pool and brought along nine-week-old, Greyson. JWOWW’s husband, Roger Mathews, held Greyson in his arms while standing in the pool. It was a loving and beautiful father-son moment. Enter: The mom-shamers.
The haters were so determined to find something wrong with this photo that they couldn’t even agree on what the problem should be. Some questioned if Greyson had sunscreen on. There’s no reason to believe he didn’t. Some worried that Roger would accidentally drop Greyson into the pool. By that logic, no parent should be able to hold their child ever. While others were concerned about exposing a newborn to chlorine. Apparently, all these random moms are scientists now.
Kate Beckinsale Had a Night Out
Kate Beckinsale went for a night out dancing with some friends and left her 18-year-old daughter, Lilly, to her own devices, as any 18-year-old should be able to handle. However, the internet quickly panicked and told Kate to “Go home and take care of your kids.”
Kate perfectly responded with, “What’s amazing is it is no longer the 18th century so now that my child is grown I don’t have to stay at home (while she is out with her own friends) playing the pianoforte, getting consumption, or trying to secure her a marriage. Oh, and I can vote now too! YAY.”
Kelly Clarkson Gave Her Child a Treat
We can probably all agree that healthy eating is important, and instilling healthy habits in children is crucial. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with a sweet treat here and there, it’s a part of childhood! That was probably Kelly Clarkson’s thinking when she gave her daughter, River, some Nutella and the mom-shamers attacked.
Comments ranged from gross exaggerations like, “Giving food like this to a child is ‘child abuse'” to body-shaming Kelly, “Nutella is PACKED with sugars, don’t make your kids blow up, too.” Are we really supposed to believe that none of these moms ever give their kids any sugar at all?
Kim Kardashian Let Her Daughter Explore Her Interests
Sometimes, mom-shaming stems from jealousy, which seems to be what happened in the case of Kim Kardashian being criticized. Kim proudly announced that three-year-old North likes to design clothes and chooses her own fabrics from her dad, Kanye West’s, work, and those fabrics are then made into North’s clothing. Kim immediately got hit with comments like, “These are the kind of things why people hate you.”
Kim replied with, “Bc she has a passion 4 fashion & we’ve given her tools 2 explore that? Spending time w dad @work isn’t bad either.” We have to agree with Kim, here. We understand the mom shamers’ envy but isn’t it great that Kim and Kanye are using their wealth to give their kids more opportunities?
Megan Fox Lets Her Son Wear What He Wants
Megan Fox’s three-year-old son, Noah, likes to wear dresses and grow his hair long. No one should really be concerning themselves with another person’s fashion choices anyway, but especially not that of a three-year-old. However, they didn’t stop the mom-shamers from attacking Megan.
Megan explained that she wants to teach her children “to be confident no matter what anyone else says.” She said that Noah does get made fun of at school for his clothing but he chooses to wear dresses anyway. One side of the argument is that Megan is responsible for protecting her son from the consequences of his choices, given his age. However, one could also say that teaching her children to be true to themselves is more valuable.
Pink Cooked With Her Kids
Pink has been mom-shamed so relentlessly that she’s actually stopped posting about her children altogether. One of the many incidents was when she took a lovely photo of herself cooking with her kids, Willow and Jameson. The issue seemed to be that Jameson was too close to the stove for people’s comfort. While we would never recommend allowing a baby near a hot stove, it seems clear that Pink had a handle on the situation.
While the internet speculated about all the horrible freak accidents that could have occurred, one supportive mother offered a different perspective. She wrote, “I’m here to tell you I have six children, all who help me cook, none that have had an accident and many of which have been in a baby carrier when I have to get the job done. They’re alive to tell you some of our best times are cooking together.” It looks like the kids truly enjoyed the quality time with their mom!
Victoria Beckham Kisses Her Kids on the Lips
The internet absolutely lost their minds when Victoria Beckham posted a photo of herself kissing her five-year-old daughter, Harper, on the lips. Mom-shamers decided that the act was “sexual,” “disgusting,” and would give Harper a “complex.”
Victoria’s supporters offered a different point of view. One person said, “How can people sexualize a woman kissing the baby she gave birth to?” While another pointed out, “Horrible things are happening in the world and people are crying over this?!” It’s worth pointing out that Harper’s father, David Beckham, also kisses her on the lips. But nobody seems to be bothered by that.
Snooki’s Daughter’s Hair Gets Messy Sometimes
When Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi posted a photo of her daughter, Giovanna, with her friend all anyone could talk about was the state of Giovanna’s hair. Mom-shamers accused Snooki of being a bad mother because Giovanna’s mane was a bit messy. Perhaps they’re unaware that it’s pretty much impossible to keep a child’s hair neat when they’re running around playing? How about we just let kids be kids?
Luckily, Snooki’s supporters jumped to her defense with some much-needed perspective with comments like, “Oh my gawd, her hair looks like she’s been a kid who’s having fun with her best freaking friend in the world.” Another person said, “I would much rather have my daughter not give a damn what any judgemental snobs think about her at all then to tell her that her appearance and what others think about her is more important than living in the moment and being happy.”
Christine Quinn Loves Her Job
Christine Quinn has decided not to take advantage of the maternity leave she was given, and instead go back to work two weeks after having her son, Christian. While every mother has different needs in terms of going back to work, and it’s a highly personal decision, that didn’t stop the public from attacking Christine’s choice.
Christine took the opportunity to remind the world of how incredible mothers are by saying, “For me, I love to work. There are single moms out there every single day working two, three jobs, doing it. Women are so strong, and they can do it. For me, I’m happy to be working. I’m thrilled to have a job, and I’m thrilled to have a baby and to do it all. I think that’s really the message here – women really can do it all, so don’t be shaming!”
Alyssa Milano Didn’t Want to Hide
Alyssa Milano has been a huge advocate for making public breastfeeding more socially acceptable. The issue is that there aren’t a whole lot of facilities in public spaces to breastfeed comfortably, yet, when a mother breastfeeds in public she tends to get mom-shamed. Isn’t it interesting how nobody minds looking at Victoria’s Secret ads plastered on billboards but watching a woman use her breasts to care for her child is considered offensive?
Alyssa proudly posted a photo of herself breastfeeding her baby, Elizabella. The actress spoke out against the critics by saying, “I can’t believe this is still an issue. When people tell a nursing mom to go to the bathroom to feed their baby, it’s like telling someone to go to the bathroom to eat their sandwich. Would you eat your lunch in the bathroom? Or under a blanket?” She finished by telling the moms of the world, “Don’t be ashamed, stand up for your rights.”
